Teachers
The BGE Smart Energy Academy Program was developed to teach 5th grade and high school students' easy ways to use energy more efficiently while increasing the energy savings in their homes. Program content supports Maryland state Learning Standards so you can easily integrate the program into your existing curriculum.
The BGE Smart Energy Academy Program comes with a teacher book filled with lesson plans and engaging activities that you can use inside and outside of the classroom. Each 5th grade student and teacher, will receive an individual Student Guide, Student Workbook, and a Smart Energy Academy Kit. Each high school student, and teacher, will receive an individual Student Interactive Notebook and a BGE Smart Energy Academy Kit. The kit includes energy-efficient products that will help students implement classroom lessons at home. Kit items include:
5th Grade Students:
High School Students:
All we ask in return for your participation in the BGE Smart Energy Academy Program is that your students complete a short survey. The student survey contains a pre- and post-program quiz (5th grade students only). Survey responses help gauge the knowledge gained by each student during the program. If your students take a pledge to be energy efficient and return their student surveys, each student will receive a certificate of achievement! A self-addressed postage-paid return envelope is provided in your teacher materials to make the return of these surveys even easier for you. If your class is distance learning, please have your students complete the Student Survey form online at BGE.com/SmartEnergyAcademy. Students will need your teacher seven-digit ID number to access the online Student Survey form.
There are a limited number of kits available for each school year. If you are a 5th grade or high school teacher and have already been contacted about participating in the program, you can enroll now here!
There is no additional cost to you, your students, or your school district.
When you enroll in the BGE Smart Energy Academy Program, one kit will be provided for each student enrolled in your class with no maximum number of kits for each class. However, there are a limited number of kits available for each school year. When this maximum number of kits has been reached, no more classrooms will be able to participate in the program until the following school year.
When you enroll in the BGE Smart Energy Academy Program, your school will get to receive energy education that can help make a positive impact on your immediate community. In addition to teaching lessons that will promote lifelong efficient use of energy by your students and their households, each eligible participating 5th-grade and high school teacher who’s school is in the BGE service territory may receive up to $100. When a participating eligible 5th-grade and high school teacher who’s school is in the BGE service territory enrolls in the Smart Energy Academy Program, they will receive a $50 e-gift card. In addition, this same eligible 5th-grade and high school teacher returns 80 percent or more of their classes’ student surveys by the deadline indicated on the teacher materials, they will receive an additional $50 e-gift card!
